On Thanksgiving Day, I ran my second 5 mile race. With very little training (are you sensing a trend?).
I mainly did it for the free shirt
I’m a sucker for a long sleeved tech tee.
So. It’s recap time.
The Night Before
BLC and I had some pasta for dinner and waited out the traffic before leaving Brooklyn and heading down to Philadelphia. Traffic was insane so we didn’t end up arriving at my parent’s house until about 12:30a.
I set out my fleece lined tights (it was supposed to be about 39 degrees Thanksgiving morning), sports bras, running jacket, gloves, Garmin, and Mizunos.
I didn’t get to bed until around 1am and set my alarm for 7:00a.
I snoozed for about a half an hour and seriously contemplated just sleeping in. But I wanted my shirt. So I begrudgingly got up while Freck and BLC laid in bed. Got dressed, got some coffee (so necessary), got a water bottle for my Nuun (lemon-lime was the flavor of the day…maybe Nuun should have made some Thanksgiving flavored tablets…) and ate a banana.
I was about ready to leave when BLC came downstairs, fully dressed and told me he was going to come with me. I definitely did not expect him to stand out in the cold on Thanksgiving morning but I was super happy he decided to come with me. I got myself a good one.
We drove over to the race where we parked easily (it was a shopping center parking lot) and we walked over to the registration to pick up my bib and shirt. I love small races. Parking, registration and shirts – done in about 10 minutes. Bathroom lines – none existent. Alex – happy.
Obligatory bib shot. (Also, please check out my awesome new Bic Band – who doesn’t love a chevron print? & it did not budge during my entire run! Love Bic Bands!)
After hanging out with BLC for a bit everyone started lining up. I turned on my Garmin and turned on my iPod. Or I tried to turn on my iPod. Unfortunately, the headphones were not working so I was pretty bummed. I obviously had no choice but to run music less. Spoiler Alert: it wasn’t all that bad.
The course was pretty. I love fall/winter on the east coast. The leaves, the frost, the smell. The first 2.5 miles were through a residential area and I was pretty happy with my pace. I didn’t go into this race expecting anything so I was hoping to come in under 50 minutes.
First half – 24:04
The second half of the course was through a park and was a bit more hilly. I found a guy who was going at a pretty good pace so I decided to stick with him for as long as possible. There were times I wanted to stop and walk but knowing that BLC was waiting for me at the end definitely pushed me to keep running. He’s good motivation.
When I got to the last mile I could have used some pump up tunes but instead I just kept telling myself that I could do anything for ten minutes. I pushed hard for that last mile, mainly because I wanted to be done & see BLC.
I saw the finish so I sprinted. I heard BLC yell from the right & I saw him right before I crossed the finish line. I looked down at my Garmin & it said 5.01 miles in … 47:57! Only a minute slower than my 5 mile PR. Much better than I thought I would do! & I worked off a small portion of my Thanksgiving dinner.
Second half – 23:53 (negative split, what?!)
Notice how my headband did not move! Didn’t touch it once! It was a Thanksgiving miracle…or just my awesome Bic band.
BLC and I grabbed some water before heading out. Because I had the best prize ever waiting for me at my parent’s house…
I may have run faster just so I could see my beautiful niece sooner. How cute is that face?
Tired baby. That’s my cue. Time for bed. Night, ya’ll.
Hope you enjoyed my recap!
